Image of the day: H24 fit for next week deployment

40South Energy and Elements Works are conducting final preparations ahead of the next week’s deployment of their H24 wave energy unit off Italy.

The 50 kW device has been moved to Livorno harbour, and will be deployed next week as the first phase of Marina di Pisa project. Another H24 device will be added eventually.

According to 40South Energy’s social media, the optical fiber data link to the Marina di Pisa site has been completed on October 2, which enabled the company to begin with device installation activities.

Marina di Pisa wave energy site has been grid connected on September 10, following the completion of directional drilling operation.

The cost of the first phase of Marina di Pisa project is estimated to be €200.000, with the total project costs amounting to €800.000, according to Michele Grassi, CEO of 40South Energy.

H24 machine consists of a guiding part located on the sea floor, or on a support structure, and of a moving part above it, which moves according to waves or tides.

The device can behave as both tidal and wave energy generating unit, but for this particular project it will harness the energy of the waves to produce electricity.

The machine is designed for islands or isolated communities with an average electricity consumption of 50 kW or more.
