IGERT Fellows Visit First Offshore Turbine in U.S.

Human Capital

The UMass Wind Energy IGERT presented their research up at University of Maine at the Advanced Structures and Composite Center.

They were hosted by Habib Dagher, the director of the center, and got a chance to visit VolturnUS, a 65-foot-tall floating turbine prototype that is 1:8th the scale of a 6-megawatt (MW), 423-foot rotor diameter design.

VolturnUS, designed and built by UMaine, is the first grid-connected offshore wind turbine in the Americas. The students briefly presented their research at a seminar, and in more detail at a joint poster session with UMaine students; and toured the UMaine facilities.
