Hyundai Heavy scores $500 million contract for Steelhead LNG’s export project in Canada

South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries said it had won a contract worth about $500 million for a liquefaction unit to be used for Steelhead LNG’s Kwispaa LNG export project in Canada’s British Columbia.

Steelhead LNG, the Vancouver-based LNG export company, is developing the Kwispaa LNG project, formerly known as Sarita LNG, via the At-Shore LNG (ASLNG) concept, using a floating LNG production and storage unit moored to marine jetties.

Once completed, this will be the world’s first coastal LNG production facility, according to Hyundai Heavy.

The shipbuilder has been provisionally nominated as the hull fabrication contractor for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of two ASLNG hulls to support the initial production capacity of Kwispaa LNG.

Hyundai Heavy Industries will collaborate with successful EPC contractors to execute FEED studies.

The ASLNG unit will be 340 meters long, 60 meters wide and weigh 74,000t. It will also be able to store up to 280,000 cubic meters of LNG.

The facility is expected to be placed in operation in 2024. It will the capacity to produce some 6 million tons of LNG per year, Hyundai Heavy said.

Steelhead LNG and the Huu-ay-aht First Nations are jointly developing the Kwispaa LNG project at Sarita Bay on Vancouver Island.

The feed gas for the facility will be sourced from northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta, according to Steelhead LNG.
