Port of Venice plans to develop larger port for big bulkers

The Port of Venice has submitted a plan to the Italian Government to develop and expand the port to allow for large bulk carriers. The scheme is aimed at creating a shipping, road and rail hub at Marghera.

According to the New Civil Engineer, to make the proposed port plans viable, a channel from the Malamocco inlet will need to be deeply and continually dredged.

Venice’s long-term threat is rising water levels.
