Schiedam-based HSM Offshore has rolled out the offshore substation topside for the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm from the construction hall to the yard.

Ørsted (former DONG Energy) awarded HSM Offshore with an EPC contract for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore substation in April 2016.

The 2,500-tonne topside is expected to be delivered mid-2018. The 1,700-tonne jacket foundation for the topside was installed at the site in the south-eastern part of the North Sea, approximately 38 kilometres off the German island of Borkum, in July 2017.

The offshore substation will collect the electricity generated by the wind farm’s 56 MHI Vestas 8MW turbines, transform it to a higher voltage level, and feed it to the German grid.

The wind farm is scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2019.
