HMD Tied to MR Tanker Order

Business & Finance

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has secured an order for a 50,000 dwt MR product tanker from clients of Monaco-based Central Shipping Group, Clarksons Platou Shipbroking reports.

The ship will be built at HMD’s Ulsan facility and is slated for delivery in the first quarter of 2019.

As disclosed, the order includes one optional MR newbuilding of the same size.

The estimated price of the vessels has been set at around USD 35 million apiece.

Central Mare, a Greek subsidiary of Central Shipping Group, has five newbuildings on order at Hyundai: four 50,000 MR2 tankers at Hyundai Mipo ordered in 2016 and one 51,600 dwt MR2 chemical tanker at Hyundai Vinashin, Stenaweco Elegance, which is slated for delivery in 2017.

Based on VesselsValue data, the remaining four MR2 newbuildings are scheduled to join their owner in 2018.

Earlier this week the shipbuilder informed that it has sold its stake in a securities firm, cashing in USD 409 million from the sale.

The transaction is part of reorganization efforts of HMD’s parent company, Hyundai Heavy Industries, aimed at cutting costs and offloading non-core business units.
