HHI Wins USD 500 Mn ASLNG Construction Deal

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has secured a USD 500 million construction contract for a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility dubbed At-Shore LNG (ASLNG).

Under the tentative deal, HHI has been entrusted with the front-end engineering design (FEED) for the hull of the ASLNG and its subsequent construction.

The concept, developed by Canadian Steelhead LNG, makes use of floating LNG production and storage units moored to marine jetties.

The facility, with a length of 340 meters, a width of 60 meters and a weight of 74,000 tons, can store up to 280,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas in its hull.

Steelhead LNG, a Canadian company based out of Vancouver, plans to use the facility for its Kwispaa LNG project, which is expected to produce 6 million tons of LNG per annum, once it becomes operational in 2024. The produced LNG will then be shipped by gas carriers to buyer countries.

Steelhead LNG is expected to launch an international tender for the facility’s topside and on-shore facilities in the second quarter and proceed with their design order in the third quarter of this year, HHI said.

The proposed natural gas liquefaction and export facility was given the go-ahead after a Huu-ay-aht community referendum resulted in a 70 percent vote in favor in March 2017.

The Kwispaa LNG Project would be located on Huu-ay-aht owned land at Sarita Bay,  about 70 kilometres southwest of Port Alberni at the southern end of the Alberni Inlet on Vancouver Island.

The National Energy Board (NEB) granted Steelhead LNG four export licenses (up to 24 million tonnes per annum) to export liquefied natural gas for 25 years.
