London-headquartered engineer Babcock said it has been contracted to supply its ecoSMRT LNG reliquefaction technology to four liquefied natural gas carriers on order at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea.

The technology enables LNG carriers to operate with higher liquefaction capacity compared to the mixed refrigerant or nitrogen expansion systems, Babcock said on Tuesday.

The technology has been developed between HHI and Babcock, and requires only one compressor, enabling lower power consumption, which in turn results in lower costs and maintenance requirements.

The South Korean shipbuilder has completed its test facility for the technology at its headquarters in Ulsan.

The company said it has acquired all the safety approvals from the South Korean Gas Safety Corporation for the technology that enables 100 percent reliquefaction of the gas that evaporates from LNG carrier tanks.
