Havila Chooses Names for Its Green Ships

Norwegian shipping company Havila Kystruten has unveiled the names of its four new environmentally-friendly ships. 

The ships will be named Havila Capella, Havila Castor, Havila Polaris and Havila Pollux.

The Havila vessels will be the most environmentally friendly ships in traffic along the Norwegian coast and driven by LNG and huge battery packs, as explained by Arild Myrvoll, CEO of the company.

From January 2021, they will operate between Bergen and Kirkenes, with calls in 34 ports on the northbound route and 33 ports on the southbound. The new ships will be able to sail into the World Heritage site Geiranger without emission by 2021. This is five years prior to the zero-emission requirements given by the Norwegian Parliament for sailings into the World Heritage fjords.

Havila Capella and Havila Castor will be built at Turkish Tersan yard, while Havila Polaris and Havila Pollux will be constructed at Spanish Barreras yard.

Earlier this year, Norwegian Havyard Design & Solutions won a contract to deliver the ship design and an extensive equipment package for the newbuild quartet.

With a length of 122.7 meters and a width of 22 meters, the new ships will be able to accommodate up to 640 passengers – 468 in berths & 172 day passengers.
