According to the Army Corps’ Norfolk District, the contractor is pumping sand at 57th Street with construction advancing north toward 70th Street.

USACE also added that this week, 57th to 65th streets are scheduled for construction.

Upon completion of the northernmost location, operations are slated to flip and proceed south, converging with the currently renourished beach at 49th Street.

During the Virginia Beach Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction Project, GLDD will place around 1.4 million cubic yards of sand on the beach, widening and raising it to 9 feet above sea-level.

Virginia Beach’s hurricane and storm-damage reduction system was originally completed in 2001, and this is the second beach-replenishment contract since initial construction.

The first occurred in 2012, when crews placed 1.25 million cubic yards of sand on the beach.
