Gibraltar Port Becomes Part of Marine LNG Society

The Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA) has joined the non-governmental organisation Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF), established to promote safety and industry best practice in the use of gas as a marine fuel.

During his speech at the opening of the International Bunker Industry Association’s (IBIA) annual convention at the Sunborn on Wednesday, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said that with this move the port is “playing its part in this exciting development in the shipping world.”

The membership of Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel, consisted of over 100 members, including key ports such as Singapore, Rotterdam, is expected to open up considerable learning opportunities in the field of LNG in the shipping environment.

“This represents a key step for the Port Authority, allowing it to draw on the technical expertise and experience present in SGMF as it considers the possibility of LNG bunkering in the future,” Gilbert Licudi, Minister for Maritime Services, said.
