German State Clears Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm

Authorities & Government

The German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has granted a license to OWP Gennaker GmbH, a subsidiary of wpd, to build and operate the 865.2MW Gennaker offshore wind farm.

The license covers the construction and operation of the wind farm consisting of 103 wind turbines, two offshore substations, and the inter-array cables.

The wind farm will feature Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines with a rated output of 8.4MW installed in the German Baltic Sea, some 15km north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula.

wpd initially planned to inaugurate the wind farm in 2022. However, opposition from the local authorities due to the wind farm’s potential impact on tourism and shipping, and the lack of the necessary grid connection capacity and the financial support from the federal government could delay the project, according to local media.

Opposition to the state’s decision to grant the permit may be filed by 17 June.
