South Korean first LNG-fueled bulk carrier has been christened on Friday at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, said the country’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The vessel named Green Iris has been ordered by the by the Korean shipowner Ilshin at the HMD and will feature a MAN ME-GI engine.

The 50,000 dwt vessel will be chartered to South Korea’s steel manufacturer Posco, and will use the vessel to transport limestone for its operation.

Posco has also delivered the LNG fuel tank made up of high manganese steel as an alternative material to the currently widely used nickel alloy.

A ministry official noted that the country is looking to accelerate the development of LNG supply infrastructure for the operation of the vessel in the future.
