Exploration of wave energy potential in Alaska underway

Business & Finance

The waters surrounding Yakutat in Alaska are being analyzed as a potential location for wave energy power generation.

As part of the US Department of Energy funded Advanced Laboratory Field Array (ALFA) project, Alaska Hydrokinetic Energy Research Center (AHERC) will be conducting a multibeam survey of Cannon Beach near Yakutat to map seafloor debris as well as to collect bathymetric data.

In addition to helping quantify the risks marine debris pose for a wave energy project in the region, the data will advance the ongoing Yakutat area wave energy resource assessment and will be used to help identify potential locations for wave energy converters, AHERC informed.

AHERC is part of Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP), based at the University of Alaska.

ACEP is dedicated to applied energy research and testing focused on lowering the cost of energy throughout Alaska and developing economic opportunities for the State, its residents, and its industries.
