Excelerate Energy, in collaboration with the Dubai Supply Authority (DUSUP) completed the first commercial gas-up operation at the Jebel Ali LNG import terminal via Excelerate’s floating storage and regasification unit Explorer.

In the operation carried out at the end of August, the FSRU Explorer gassed-up all five tanks of a 173,000-cbm LNG carrier, in a 17-hour period, according to a company statement.

The two companies informed that the utilization of the FSRU for these operations will enable LNG vessels departing regional dry docks avoid having to travel significant distances to perform this step in the LNG cargo cycle. Gas-up operations are necessary for LNG carriers in order to make cargo tanks ready to receive liquefied natural gas cargoes after leaving the dry dock.

A similar gas-up operation was completed only a few day after the first one.

The FSRU Explorer, that has been upgraded at the end of last year, now has the capability to provide gas-up, cool-down, and loading services to LNG carriers. The FSRU was also upgraded to include an LNG bunker port to service small-scale LNG offtakers.

Earlier in March, Excelerate Energy said the FSRU reached a sendout capacity of 1 bcf/d.
