EverLoNG concludes second carbon capture demonstration onboard LNG-powered ship

The EverLoNG project, an initiative aiming to encourage the uptake of ship-based carbon capture (SBCC) by trialing its use onboard LNG-fueled ships, has completed the second demonstration campaign on Heerema Marine Contractors’ LNG-powered crane ship Sleipnir.

The demonstration campaign began in June 2024 when LNG-powered Sleipnir set sail with the EverLoNG SBCC prototype, developed in the Netherlands by Carbotreat and VDL Carbon Capture.

As disclosed, during the demonstration campaign, the prototype unit achieved just under the targeted 500 operational units, returned a capture rate of over 80%, and resulted in around 1.5 tons of captured CO2 being liquefied and stored onboard.

Part of the campaign was also to determine particle emissions and assess their behaviors which, along with further analysis of emissions and solvent degradation, is in progress.

The EverLoNG project plans to publish results from the Sleipnir campaign in the coming months.

EverLoNG Project Coordinator, Marco Linders (TNO), commented: “The successful conclusion of the Sleipnir campaign represents another important step towards decarbonising the global maritime fleet. The EverLoNG engineers and partners have overcome challenging circumstances to deliver these results and their efforts are to be applauded.”

The first campaign, which was conducted onboard Seapeak Arwa, an LNG-powered LNG carrier chartered by TotalEnergies, ended in February 2024, demonstrating a CO2 capture rate of 85%.
