Eni, Sonangol strengthen gas cooperation

Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi and Sonangol’s Chairman Francisco de Lemos Maria discussed the use of gas extracted by Eni in Angola for power production at a meeting in Rome.

During the meeting, the companies stressed the intention to use the gas to provide energy for the domestic market and to support the local economy, Eni informed in a statement on Wednesday.

It was also agreed that in the coming months, the two companies will undertake the evaluation of development projects of gas fields in the Angolan basin of the Lower Congo.

Eni, that also has a 13.5 pct stake in Angola LNG plant, which was shut down in April last year after a major rupture on a flare line, said the gas would be used to produce up to 1.5 GW of electricity in the country.

In addition to gas field development, and as part of downstream activities, Eni will support Sonangol in order to define the Lobito refinery project, which will be developed in the coming months.
