Eco Wave Power advances infrastructure work for Portugal wave energy project

Wave energy developer Eco Wave Power has started infrastructure upgrades at its 1 MW wave energy project in Porto, Portugal.

According to Exo Wave Power, the work focuses on preparing “The Gallery,” a breakwater tunnel, to install wave energy conversion equipment.

The company is clearing sand and debris, reinforcing structural elements, and sealing water ingress points to ensure operational efficiency. Once completed, “The Gallery” will also feature an underwater wave energy museum and education center.

Following infrastructure upgrades, Eco Wave Power said that it will proceed with technology deployment. The project aligns with Portugal’s target of 85% renewable electricity generation by 2030.

The company appointed Juan José Gómez as Power Station Manager to oversee project operations. The Portuguese firm MOQ Engineering is handling the final design and load calculations. In parallel, Eco Wave Power has engaged Portuguese engineering firm, MOQ Engineering, to perform the final design and load calculations for the project

The Porto wave energy project aims to validate the viability of large-scale wave energy generation. It is also expected to cut carbon emissions, create jobs, and drive innovation in Portugal’s renewable energy sector.

In August 2024, the company launched its first MW-scale wave energy project in Porto, Portugal. The company’s CEO and engineering team met with APDL (Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S.A) and other stakeholders for the project’s kickoff.
