DSME Lands USD 370-Mn LNG Carrier Deal

Business & Finance

Greek shipowner Alpha Gas S.A. has placed an order for two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME).

The 173,400 cbm LNG carrier pair will be built at Okpo shipyard, in Geoje and will be delivered to their owners by the end of 2020, DSME said.

The duo, worth USD 370 million, will be fitted with the M-type, Electronically Controlled, Gas Injection (MEGI) engines.

DSME has been on a roll since the beginning of this year due to a recovery in demand for shipbuilding.

According to a DSME spokesperson, there are positive signs on the market pointing to an improvement of the sector and a rise in ship prices.

Just two weeks ago, the company reported a contract for the construction of another two LNG carriers for an undisclosed shipowner from Oceania, worth USD 366 million.

The latest contract brings DSME’s orderbook to 14 ships secured since the beginning of this year, including eight LNG carriers, five VLCCs and one special-purpose vessel.

The shipbuilder returned to profit in 2017 for the first time in the past six years.
