Drilling begins at MeyGen tidal site

Operations & Maintenance

Atlantis has started horizontal directional drilling operations at the MeyGen tidal site in Caithness.

The drilling will create the bores for the cables which will connect the onshore site at Ness of Quoys with the four subsea turbines planned for the Phase 1A of the Meygen tidal project.

Each of the four bores will be approximately 550 m long, and are designed to contain a 4.4 kV cable that will export the electricity.

The drilling is expected to take four months and will be carried out by Manchester-based O’Connor Utilities Ltd.

Atlantis has also announced that 4000 t of steel arrived at Scrabster harbor, Caithness.

Steel foundations

JGC engineering staff are inspecting the steel that will be used for the fabrication of tidal turbine foundation ballast.

Construction of the first phase of the project is expected to take place throughout 2015 and 2016, with first power being delivered to the grid for sale in 2016, Atlantis’ press release reads.
