DP Energy finds its place at FORCE

Authorities & Government

An agreement has been signed between the Canadian government and Irish-based DP Energy to develop a 4.5 MW tidal energy project at the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE).

DP Energy plans to install three 1.5 MW in-stream tidal energy turbines at the FORCE test site in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia.

As part of its agreement with government, DP Energy will receive a developmental tidal feed-in tariff for the electricity produced by this project. The feed-in tariff rate is C$53 cents per kW/h.

Simon De Pietro, DP Energy’s CEO, said: “DP Energy is delighted to join with the other FORCE bertholders in picking up the tidal energy challenge in the Bay of Fundy. We welcome Nova Scotia’s vision and forward thinking in recognizing tidal energy as a one of the major worldwide renewable energy sources for the future.”

Four other tidal energy projects will test technologies at FORCE:

  • Minas Energy, with Marine Current Turbines and Bluewater,
  • Black Rock Tidal Power,
  • Atlantis Operations Canada,
  • Cape Sharp Tidal Venture, a joint venture between Emera and OpenHydro, a DCNS company.

DP Energy is a renewable energy company operating worldwide to develop renewable energy projects which are both sustainable and environmentally benign.
