Dong Schedules Horns Rev 2 Blades Makeover

Operations & Maintenance

Danish energy company, Dong Energy, will upgrade all turbines on 91 2.3MW turbines installed at Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm.

The company named larger than expected wear, caused by strong wind mixed with water, sand and salt, on seven-year-old blades as the reason for the refit job.

Total of 273 blades will be inspected, repaired with Siemens’ rubber coating and upgraded with new aerodynamic components increasing the power production by between 1% and 1.5%.

The new upgrade will improve wind capture equivalent to two additional 2.3 MW wind turbines, the company stated.

All refit work will be carried out in Esbjerg and will start May 2015 and is expected to finish in mid-summer 2016.

The wind farm, located in the North Sea 30km off the coast of western Jutland, was inaugurated in September 2009.
