Denmark: NKT Flexibles Becomes Part of National Oilwell Varco

Business & Finance

NKT Flexibles announced that it has become a part of National Oilwell Varco (NOV).

With a proven record of reliability, innovation and life of field preservation, NKT Flexibles has supplied commercial flexible pipe systems since 1968. Today, the company offers a full range of tailored solutions based upon unbonded flexible pipe applications including all required ancillaries, such as mid-water and buoyancy structures, stiffeners, restrictors, etc., engineered to convey fluids safely under even the most extreme conditions. And as a key part of NOV’s initiative to increase its footprint in the floating production segment, NKT Flexibles teams up with APL™ to launch a game changer in the industry.

Single centre of competence

NKT Flexibles CEO Michael C. Hjorth explains, “Floating production is characterized by a variety of components and systems that must interface perfectly in order to be efficient. Through the shared expertise of NKT Flexibles and APL™, mooring and flexible riser interfacing is now collected in one centre of competence which will unleash synergies in the execution of floating production projects across the globe.”

Riser and mooring interface management

A key point of success for all floating production projects is a proper management of the interface between the floating unit itself and the flexible riser system connecting it with the associated subsea equipment. The combination of NKT Flexibles’ flexible pipe excellence with APL™’s long-standing expertise in superior mooring solutions gives rise to a holistic approach for designing and installing optimized flexible riser & mooring systems. By uniting design and manufacturing capabilities across areas that used to be contracted separately, fewer companies are required to work on each other’s designs to deliver a successful solution. This also drives a shift from sequential to parallel design and engineering processes and offers significant risk mitigation, increased process agility and an optimization in time to first oil.

From humble beginnings to a new world of standardization

For NKT Flexibles, becoming part of NOV is another step in a remarkable journey. “We had excellent opportunities for technological and innovative growth with our former owners in NKT and Subsea 7, and for that we are naturally grateful,” says CEO Michael C. Hjorth and continues, “NKT Flexibles has always offered innovation where it matters and reliability where it counts and now, our incorporation into NOV promises a new level of standardization in system components and solutions for the FPSO / FPU segment. We are set to present the industry as a whole with a viable and attractive alternative in riser & mooring system design, installation and operation.”
