Demag Cranes Receives Order to Supply 164 Rope Hoists for Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm (UK)

Operations & Maintenance

Demag Cranes has won an order from Granada Material Handling Ltd to supply 164 electric rope hoists for a renewable energy project – the new Gwynt y Môr offshore windfarm in Wales. The order comes in the wake of a contract, awarded to Granada by RWE npower renewables, to design, supply, certify, deliver, test and commission crane systems for the new Gwynt y Môr offshore windfarm.

Granada has incorporated the Demag hoist within its specially designed “Python” crane system, which will be mounted on the foundation platform of wind turbines and each of two substations in the offshore windfarm. The “Python” units have been developed for off-loading heavy service components from supply vessels to the laydown areas of the offshore structures. The driving factors in the development of the crane units have been health & safety, functionality and ease of use for operators.

Thomas H. Hagen, Member of the Management Board of Demag Cranes AG and COO commented: “With the solutions and products of our two strong brands, Demag and Gottwald, we support both the offshore and onshore wind turbine industries throughout the lifetime of their power generation equipment. Our products are in daily use during the manufacture of the turbine components, in loading and unloading vessels with our Harbour Cranes and are essential as lifting equipment on-board the turbines, which includes the rope hoists now ordered by Granada.”

Mark Sidwell, Director of Granada, stated: “We have had previous happy experience of working with Demag Cranes on similar offshore windfarm projects. We have worked closely with Demag Cranes in the development of a material handling solution, which meets the specific requirements of the Gwynt y Môr project. The company’s depth of technical expertise has complemented the skills of our own renewable product and service division.
