The construction of the 10,800 CEU car carrier, which was jointly developed by GSI and Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, began on February 12 with the groundbreaking ceremony.

The ship features LNG dual-fuel propulsion as well as ammonia- and methanol-ready capabilities. It is also equipped with an integrated exhaust gas recirculation technology (EGR), meeting the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards.

HMM placed an order for up to ten 10,800 CEU LNG dual fuel car carriers at the Chinese shipyard at the end of 2023.

The car carriers were ordered on the back of a long-term charter with South Korean logistics company Hyundai Glovis.

GSI said it has received nearly 40 orders for car carriers and built and delivered 13 car carriers so far.

In May 2024, Hyundai Glovis booked six 10,800 CEU LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) at GSI, underlining the dominance of Chinese shipyards as the winners of most of the world’s new orders for car carriers.
