Concerns raised over PTEC tidal project

Authorities & Government

Local residents in the Ventnor area will voice their concerns at Vetnor Central to discuss possible issues regarding the construction of the tidal energy centre off the Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight County Press reports.

The locals are worried about the impact the tidal energy center will have on the environment, and are also dissatisfied with the technical problems the Isle of Wight Council website had, which prevented them to see the documents for the planned tidal centre. Questions have been raised over the timing of the planning application as well, which was published over Christmas.

Isle of Wight officials said that everything was done transparently, and they apologized for the inconveniences IT errors caused.

“The council also appreciates that there is local concern about the impact of the underground cabling and would like to reassure local residents that in considering this application, the impact of the works and need for appropriate and sympathetic reinstatement will form part of the assessment of the proposal,” the spokesman for the Isle of Wight Council was quoted as saying by Isle of Wight County Press.

Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) has submitted an application to the Marine Management Organisation and Isle of Wight Council for permission to construct and operate a tidal energy demonstration site. If consent is granted, the construction could start in 2016.
