CMA CGM Linked to 6 Boxships Order at HHI

French liner giant CMA CGM is reported to have ordered six 14,000 TEU boxships at Korean shipbuilding conglomerate Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Under the deal, the ships would be built at HHI’s Ulsan yard. The expected delivery of the ships is slated for early 2017.

The deal was confirmed to Lloyd’s List by the company’s spokesperson. CMA CGM did not reply to emails sent by World Maritime News seeking confirmation.

The company has just welcomed into the fleet two of its biggest ships, the most recent one being the 18,000 TEU CMA CGM Georg Forster.

This gigantic vessel, forms part of a series of six sister vessels named after great explorers. The first ship from the series, the  17,722 TEU CMA CGM Kerguelen, was delivered by Samsung Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries in Busan, South Korea,to the company in April.

The liner company has also ordered three 20,600 TEU boxships to be delivered in 2017, thus joining the elite club of heavy-weight ship owners of over 20,000 TEU ships.
