The 3.4MW tidal energy device, developed by China, has started generating limited amounts of power, Chinese media report.

The two turbines installed on the device with the combined capacity of 1MW have run successfully in the southern waters off Xiushan Island, Xinhua News Agency reports.

The additional five turbines, with the capacity of 2.4MW, will be gradually launched, increasing the device’s capacity up to 3.4MW.

The modular generator is 70 m long and 30 m wide. With the height of 20 m, it weighs around 2,500 tonnes. The predicted annual output of the device is 6,000 MWh.
