China to Enact Law on International Seabed Exploration

China’s top legislature adopted the proposal to enact the country’s first law on international seabed exploration in the next five years, Xinhua reports.

According to the report from the Environment and Resources Protection Committee (ERPC) of the National People’s Congress (NPC) it is necessary to work on a law for the exploration, development and management of deep sea resources.

The law would cover international seabed areas which refer to seabeds, the ocean floor and subsoil below the high seas, or waters beyond the limits of any national jurisdiction.

These areas are belived to be be rich in strategic resources such as minerals, natural gas hydrates and biological resources.
