The agreement, which was signed on 9 October, follows the company’s announcement of a new fleet renewal program, under which CMES plans to build no more than three ships at DSIC. In May this year, the firm ordered two 307,000 dwt very large crude carriers (VLCCs).

Under the new deal, the ships will be equipped with the latest eco-friendly technologies aimed at cutting the ships’ energy and fuel consumption. Furthermore, CMES expects that the ships will meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) emission targets for nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and carbon dioxide (CO2),

The units, which are slated for delivery in April 2024, will be independently designed and developed by China Merchants Shipping Group.

The total value of the contract is $51.5 million.
