China: GL Garrad Hassan to Support GEDI in Offshore Wind Power Market

The third phase of training courses provided by GL Garrad Hassan to Guangdong Electrical Design Institute (GEDI) has been successfully completed.

The training courses have aided GEDI in their talent development and technology accumulation. GL Garrad Hassan will continue to support GEDI to a larger extent in the follow-up wind power projects off the coast of Guangdong Province.

GL Garrad Hasan has signed a contract with GEDI for extensive design support on offshore wind turbine foundations and evaluating their suitability for various offshore wind projects. The renewable energy consultancy will provide technology support, design advice and review, technical seminars, and will issue technical review reports for each project GEDI is delivering to.

GL Garrad Hassan has provided technical services and support to onshore and offshore wind energy, wave energy, tidal energy and solar energy projects around the world. GEDI, the survey designer of the first offshore wind power project in Guangdong province, is taking advantage of this experience to gain a deeper understanding of the latest software and international specifications to optimise offshore turbine foundations and design. As a result of this cooperation, GEDI will also gain greater insight into the Chinese and global engineering industry, which will aid the development of GEDIs offshore engineering business.

Mathias Steck, GL Garrad Hassan Regional Manager Asia Pacific said: “Guangdong province is set to become an important provider of clean and reliable energy through the start of the offshore wind development. We are extremely happy to be able to contribute to this important project. China’s wind industry is progressing with unprecedented speed and momentum across all aspects of the wind energy generation chain. We are proud to contribute to this success by supporting GEDI and delivering wind turbine designs and measurement campaigns, offshore training and consultancy, strategic advice, inspection and quality assurance.”

The Guangdong province has abundant offshore wind resource, with the implementation of the 12th Five-Year plan calling for the construction of three to four gigawatt scale wind farms over the next few years.
