Singapore-based company Canopy Power has deployed renewable energy systems that include floating solar, at Soneva’s luxury resorts in the Maldives, with a new project on the way, cutting diesel use and lowering carbon emissions.

Canopy Power has completed the installation of renewable energy systems at Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi. The installations include 5.2 MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 4.7 MWh of battery storage, supplying 50% of the resorts’ electricity needs.

This move is expected to cut diesel consumption by 2,000,000 liters annually and reduce carbon emissions by 5,000 tons per year.

The projects were completed in six months, with Canopy Power designing, sourcing, and implementing the systems in collaboration with Yonsan Engineering. 

The partners are now advancing a new floating solar PV installation at Soneva Secret. It features a 2 MWp of solar capacity and 3 MWh of battery storage, targeting 90% renewable energy penetration. The company noted that this will be “the largest floating solar project in the Maldives.”

“Soneva sets a high standard of sustainability in Maldives with the installation of 5.2MWp solar PV and 4.7MWh of battery storage, ensuring that 50% of their electricity comes from renewable sources,” said Canopy Power in a social media post.

“Soneva and Canopy Power are taking it further, at the third Soneva resort in Maldives, Soneva Secret, with the implementation of 2MWp of floating solar PV and 3MWh of batteries reaching 90% renewable energy penetration.”

Canopy Power noted that its upcoming floating solar installation at Soneva Secret “will be a game-changer, further revolutionizing sustainable energy in the hospitality industry.”

In early February, Canopy Power and Norway’s Ocean Sun formed a strategic partnership. The goal of the partnership is to expand floating solar deployment in Australia, targeting enhanced renewable energy solutions while addressing land and water constraints.
