Canadian island explores tidal energy

The Government of Prince Edward Island is reportedly looking to explore the feasibility of harnessing the energy of the tides to produce electricity for the island.

According to CBC News, Canada’s news broadcaster, Prince Edward Island’s government is engaging the researchers from Acadia University to determine which areas of the island are most suitable for tidal energy generation.

“What our project wants to look at is connecting that initial analysis to the local knowledge of where we have strong currents, the sailors and fishermen would know. And then trying to determine if those strong currents are strong enough that they would be able to turn a tidal turbine and generate electricity,” Richard Karsten, one of the researchers at Acadia University, told CBC News.

Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province located on the east coast of Canada.
