Canada: Provinces’ premiers launch Energy Strategy

Authorities & Government

Premiers of Canada’s provinces issued Canadian Energy Strategy document that aims to strengthen the economy, create jobs, ensure a secure supply of energy for all Canadians, address the climate change, and support energy innovation.

The Energy Strategy provides the foundation for provinces and territories to work together on energy priorities and the shared goals of sustainable and secure energy production, supply and transportation, according to the Council of the Federation.

Through agreement on a vision, common principles and objectives for energy development, provinces and territories are now better positioned to identify opportunities to develop, transport and transmit energy and to promote a robust research and technology sector to enhance the competitiveness of Canada’s energy sector and encourage the transition to a lower carbon economy, it is stated in the press release issued by Canada’s Premiers.

“Canada’s energy future will require a diverse portfolio of policies that send a strong, long-term signal across the economy to enhance energy efficiency, lower our carbon footprint and support the technological innovations required to drive these priorities. Premiers agree on the importance of transforming how we use and produce energy with cleaner and more sustainable approaches, which is part of governments’ broader economy-wide approach to addressing climate change,” Canada’s Premiers’ press release reads.

Premiers noted that provincial and territorial governments will collaborate in different ways to pursue initiatives and address energy issues in line with their unique strengths, challenges and priorities.

The Council of the Federation comprises Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers. It was established in 2003 with the aim to enable premiers to work collaboratively to strengthen the Canadian federation by fostering a constructive relationship among the provinces and territories, and with the federal government.
