Canada: Kwispaa LNG environment assessment begins

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency said Thursday it started a federal environmental assessment for the Kwispaa LNG export project, proposed by Steelhead LNG.

Vancouver-based Steelhead LNG, in cooperation with First Nations, plans to build a liquefied natural gas export facility located at Sarita Bay, 10 kilometres northeast of Bamfield on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

The project has previously secured National Energy Board (NEB) approval to export up to 24 million tons of LNG for a period of 25 years.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency invites the public and Indigenous groups to comment on which aspects of the environment may be affected by this LNG project and what should be examined during the environmental assessment, as detailed in the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) guidelines.

Comments received will be taken into consideration in finalizing the EIS guidelines before issuing them to the proponent, Kwispaa LNG, the agency said.

This is the second of four opportunities for the public to comment on the environmental assessment of the project.

All comments received will be considered public. Written comments in either official language must be submitted by January 16, 2019.
