BioPower System (BPS) has begun the diving operations to prepare its bioWAVE wave energy unit for commissioning.

bioWave wave energy unit, which was deployed off Port Fairy, Australia, in December 2015 is being prepared for commissioning planned to take place after the completion of subsea work and diving operations, expected to continue throughout February.

Once all equipment has been verified as ready for operation the commissioning will begin, according to BPS.

bioWAVE is a 26 m tall oscillating structure designed to sway back-and-forth beneath the ocean swell through an arc of up to 40 degrees.

This oscillating motion activates opposing hydraulic cylinders, and the pressurised hydraulic fluid spins a 250 kW generator to produce electricity.

This demonstration device is expected to operate for a 12-month period before being decommissioned.

BioPower Systems is an Australian renewable energy technology company which is developing systems for both wave and tidal power conversion.
