Business & Finance

Basslink informed that the electricity interconnector has returned to service ahead of its expected return to service date of June 14, 2016. Basslink Telecoms (the fibre optic cable) was back in service on Friday 10 June.

Reportedly, Basslink resumed operation at 11:51 am, exporting power from Tasmania to Victoria at 112 MWh.

Chief executive of Basslink, Malcolm Eccles, said: “We are pleased to resume normal operations. I would like to thank our repair team for their hard work and commitment over the past six months. “I would also like to thank Alcatel-Lucent, Prysmian and the Basslink operational team, lead by Joska Ferencz and Mark Shilliday.”

Basslink, a subsea cable connecting George Town in Tasmania and Loy Yang in Victoria, experienced a fault on December 20, 2015, approximately 100 km off the Tasmanian coastline in Bass Strait.

Regarding the cause of the fault, Eccles said that examinations into fault diagnosis are still ongoing.
