AXYS rides Bimep’s waves

TRIAXYS directional wave buoy has been deployed at Bimep test site off Spain to assess the performance of Marmok-A5 wave energy converter.

The installation of the buoy from the Canadian manufacturer AXYS Technologies was conducted by the Bilbao-based marine contractor Commercial Diving Activity.

The instrument will allow to characterise individual waves and wave groups and better assess the performance characteristics of Marmok-A5 wave energy converter, according to OPERA.

Marmok-A5, constructed by the Spanish wave energy developer Oceantec Energías Marinas, was deployed at Bimep site mid-October as part of the EU-funded OPERA project, led by Basque technology research center Tecnalia.

Having completed the installation of all process instrumentation, the OPERA project informed it is ready to proceed to its open-sea testing phase which involves the collection of data for benchmarking structural and power performance of the wave energy prototype.

The deployment of the TRIAXYS buoy follows the recently installed pressure sensor and data logger in front of the Mutriku wave power plant, also as part of the OPERA project.

Project OPERA (Open Sea Wave Operating Experience to Reduce Energy Cost) involves the consortium of 12 members working together to halve the cost of wave energy.
