The cargo containers fell from the ship in the afternoon hours and were drifting near at the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), according to a report from US Coast Guard.

Sector Hampton Roads launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Portsmouth, and diverted the Coast Guard cutter Razorbill to assist with the loose containers.

Three of the containers have sunk and all other containers have been brought back to NIT.

The USCG said that it is coordinating efforts with the Virginia Port Authority’s maritime incident response team for recovery.
