Allswater starts detailed design of Triton tidal platform

Allswater, a Canadian engineering firm, has started detail design works of the Triton tidal platform for Black Rock Tidal Power.

The semi-submersible Triton platform will host an array of Schottel Hydro turbines generating up to 2.5 MW of power, Allswater press release reads.

Black Rock Tidal Power was one of the four tidal energy developers that received approval for developmental feed-in tariff granted by the Government of Canada for tidal projects in Bay of Fundy, at FORCE testing site.

The Triton platform is planned for installation at the FORCE site and is scheduled to begin providing tidal energy to Nova Scotia in 2017, according to Allswater.

The platform has two spar buoys that provide buoyancy and house both electrical and mechanical equipment for the installation. It is attached to a gravity base with a universal joint, allowing the array to align to the direction of the flow.

The platform will be maintenance friendly by allowing the spar buoys to transition from the vertical operating position to the horizontal maintenance position with the use of water ballast.
