ACEP completes Tanana River turbine testing

Research & Development

Alaska Center for Energy and Power’s (ACEP) AHERC team has concluded the testing of an in-river turbine at the Tanana River test site in Nenana, Alaska.

The team from Alaska Hydrokinetic Energy Research Center (AHERC) tested a New Energy 2.5kW in-river turbine over the summer.

The turbine was deployed in the middle of the river off a floating pontoon barge where it was analyzed for operation in Alaskan river conditions.

The team tested the turbine’s power output characteristics and energy storage techniques.

As part of the testing program, a power electronics system, designed and built by AHERC and Remote Power, was also tested for its ability to convert the river current into usable electricity.

Based at the University of Alaska, ACEP is dedicated to applied energy research and testing focused on lowering the cost of energy throughout Alaska and developing economic opportunities for the State, its residents, and its industries.
