The scope of delivery includes ABB turbochargers, generators, switchgear, transformers, frequency converters, propulsion unit control systems and Azipod® propulsion system. ABB also has options for the supply of the equipment for remaining 15 vessels.

Contract for the construction of the first ARC7 ice-class tanker has been already awarded to the South Korean shipbuilder, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME), with the options to build, launch, equip, complete and deliver the rest of the vessels.

Each of the 170,000 m³ vessels will enable year round deliveries of LNG produced by the Yamal LNG project and will be designed for ambient temperatures of up to minus 50°C and independent navigation in ice more than 2.1 meters thick.

Yamal LNG project, based in the estuary of the Ob River is one of the largest industrial undertakings in the Arctic. Yamal LNG is currently owned by NOVATEK (80%) and Total (20%). The project ensures production and marketing of the Russian Arctic’s vast natural gas reserves and has involved the construction of a major new maritime route for transporting liquefied natural gas to Europe and Asia.

The Project will involve the drilling of more than 200 wells, the construction of 3 LNG trains, each with a capacity of 5.5 million tons per year, and a vast gas terminal.
