Germany: Nordic Yards Finish Extensive Modernisation Work on Vessel Norilskiy Nickel

Nordic Yards, manufacturer of technologically sophisticated and innovative special ships and maritime structures, handed over “Norilskiy Nickel” to Norilsk Nickel. The Russian mining company commissioned Nordic Yards to carry out extensive modernisation work to the special ship, which is suitable for Arctic waters. With today’s handover Nordic Yards are delivering the ship just two months later after a major overhaul.

The work included the retrofitting of two loading cranes, two provision cranes and one shelter deck. In addition to a new harbour diesel generator, the ship now has reefer container sockets. The underwater section has been sandblasted and completely preserved again. Furthermore, the employees of Nordic Yards have performed supplementary maintenance and repair work. Today the “Norilskiy Nickel” is back on the high seas and heading for Murmansk under the captaincy of Yuri Vlasov again. As a representative of Norilsk Nickel, Captain Vlasov was very satisfied and expressed his thanks to Nordic Yards for the smooth cooperation.

Now the employees in Wismar are turning all their attention to the completion of the icebreaking tanker “Nordic AT 19”. The newly constructed special ship, which was also commissioned by Norilsk Nickel in February 2010, is being moved to the pier for the final work. The trial voyage will be held in August 2011. After a detailed test phase the tanker will be delivered on time at the end of September 2011 and will be deployed mainly on the Northern Russian sea routes.
