Petronas’ Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline Catches Fire

The Petronas-owned Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline (SSGP) in Bukit Beriwan caught fire on June 10, Bernama reports.

Lawas Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Shamlie Radae, who led the rescue operation with five personnel and two engines, said a call was received from the public at about 1.58 am.

“We contacted Petronas to inform of the fire and they requested us to help vacate the area,” he said when contacted.

The fortunate circumstance is that the accident happened away from any villages or settlements. Pipe’s valves were closed belatedly due to the fact that the rescue team had to use logging tracks to reach the site.

Radae was reported saying that the fire was put out at 2:48 am, and that Petronas has sent a technical team to investigate the cause of the incident.

The RM4.6 billion SSGP began transporting gas from Kimanis, Sabah to the LNG complex in Bintulu last January.
