Qatar: RasGas Celebrates Safety Record

RasGas of Qatar announced that the company has achieved an unprecedented 88 million work hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI).

RasGas has experienced a four-fold increase in construction activities and contract workers handling several mega projects like the Barzan Gas Project, which is the largest in the region, the Flow Assurance Project and the recently completed Helium 2 plant, which is the largest helium plant in the world.

I would like to commend them for their relentless focus on making safety a way of life at our worksites,” said Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, RasGas Chief Executive Officer, during a recognition event held at Grand Hyatt, Doha for the Venture Group and their contractors to celebrate this historic achievement.

The recognition event was attended by Ibrahim Ibrahim, Economic Advisor to the Emiri Diwan and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of RasGas and Saad Al-Kaabi, Director, Oil & Gas Ventures, Qatar Petroleum in addition to senior shareholder delegates from QP and ExxonMobil, Qatargas and senior contractor representatives.

RasGas currently manages over 29,000 multi-national workers who work on the Barzan Gas Project. They come from different parts of the world ranging from South Korea, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal to Japan. These workers are spread across a three square kilometre site, often in challenging conditions and at a rate of over 1.5 million work-hours per week. Their languages, cultures and knowledge backgrounds differ and, although many are new workers for RasGas, they have adapted to the company’s stringent safety, health and environment policies and procedures.

“Our unrelenting focus on systems compliance, hazard recognition, training, as well as leveraging our lessons learned, has played a big part in getting us here,” said Al Mohannadi.

“This LTI-free record demonstrates stewardship activities based on international standards including those of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Oil and Gas Producers Association (OGP). Our activities are constantly confirmed with strong audit and assessment programmes focused on strict compliance with the requirements,” he said.

RasGas has been appointed by shareholders, Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil, to design, construct and operate the Barzan Gas Project, one of the largest and technologically advanced gas projects in the region.
