Hydrogen from H2Terminals’ offshore energy island to run through East London pipeline

Business Developments & Projects

London-based technology company H2Terminals has entered into an agreement to supply hydrogen produced at its offshore energy island project in the North Sea to industrial users in London and the Thames Eastuary region.

To confirm its commitment, H2Terminals signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cadent, Britain’s gas distribution network, to supply hydrogen through the East London Hydrogen Pipeline. The pipeline, planned to be operational by 2030, will connect hydrogen production sites near Tilbury and the Thames Enterprise Park to industrial consumers in central East London.

Hydrogen supplies will be produced at H2Terminals’ offshore energy island project located within North Sea’s 56th Quadrant using wind, wave, and solar energy.

Produced hydrogen will be liquefied and transported by specialized vessels to terminals on the Thames Estuary, where it will be distributed via Cadent’s East London Hydrogen Pipeline to industrial users.

Last year, H2Terminals, and its supply chain partners HiDROGEN and D3IM, signed an MoU with classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) to assess the feasibility of the green hydrogen infrastructure project in the UK, specifically floating production and transport of hydrogen, and identify regulatory requirements, including safety cases and risk assessments, for the development of the offshore island and supply chain.

Gerry Wilkinson, CEO of H2Terminals, said: “This partnership with Cadent represents a watershed moment for green hydrogen infrastructure in London. By combining H2Terminals’ innovative production capabilities with Cadent’s world-class network capabilities and their new 100% hydrogen pipeline, we’re not just delivering cost-effective hydrogen solutions – we’re accelerating the industrial transformation needed to combat climate change.”

Kelly Manders, East London Pipeline Project Manager, added: “H2Terminals joins a growing number of producers who will support our journey. Their commitment along with others to supply green hydrogen through our network will create a compelling and unstoppable movement. Together, we’re building the foundation for a zero-carbon industrial revolution in East London.”

As part of its offshore energy island project, H2Terminals is working with London P&I Club, a marine liability insurer, to evaluate and develop insurance solutions for the shipping of green hydrogen.

The solutions will include coverage for H2Terminals’ three types of hydrogen-powered vessels, its patented liquid hydrogen storage systems and features such as onboard fuel cells and autonomous operations.
