Stimulation ops underway at Canadian firm’s gas field off Türkiye

Exploration & Production

Canada’s oil and gas player Trillion Energy is pressing on with stimulating natural gas production at a field off the coast of Türkiye following weather-induced delays.

In January 2025 the company completed the installation of new velocity string tubing in two wells located on tripods, Alapli-2 and Bayhanli-2, at the SASB field. This took approximately two weeks to complete.

Starting in October 2024, new tubing was installed in four wells on the Akçakoca platform. A total of six wells have now received the new smaller tubing size (2 3/8″ as opposed to the previous 4 1/2″) to mitigate water loading conditions.

In a previous update from mid-January, Trillion shared that the nitrogen stimulation for Bayhanli-2 and Alapli-2 was postponed due to severe weather conditions, with plans to resume operations on January 16.

According to a social media update from January 16, nitrogen (N2) tubes were loaded onto the workboat at Akçakoca Port and on their way to the Akkaya tripod, where nitrogen stimulation would be performed on Alapli-2. After that, the crew was to move to the East Ayazli tripod to carry out nitrogen stimulation on Bayhanli-2.

Nitrogen lifting was ongoing on Alapli on the following day. As stated by Trillion, tripod wells continue to receive nitrogen injections to stimulate production, but inclement weather caused several delays over the past few weeks. Furthermore, while Alapli-2 and Bayhanli-2 initially responded positively to the injection, stable long-term flow rates have not yet been achieved.

The Canadian player intends to stimulate the Akçakoca-3 and South Akçakoca-2 wells using nitrogen in the upcoming week, once the weather stabilizes. The company says a gas lift compressor system was sourced for the Akçakoca platform to provide continuous gas lifting injection to certain wells to support production.

Additionally, plans are underway to boost production by installing a progressive cavity pump (PCP) in a well and two slim-hole electric submersible pumps (ESPs) attached to the new tubing in two wells.

As explained by Trillion, these strategic interventions involving artificial lift are critical to sustaining long-term production rates and optimizing well performance. They are expected to take place in the upcoming months.
