ZESTAs and TEEMO looking into development of hydrogen shipping fuel in Tanzania

Collaboration

The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and Tanzania’s Environment and Empowerment Movement (TEEMO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of green hydrogen shipping fuel and the associated capacity building in Tanzania.

As disclosed, under the MoU, ZESTAs will provide technical expertise and global industry connections to support TEEMO’s initiatives, and TEEMO will support ZESTAs efforts on the ground by organizing stakeholder engagement activities, including meetings with government officials, Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), port authorities, shipowners, logistics stakeholders and technical experts.

According to ZESTAs, the partnership aims to foster the development of green hydrogen production, infrastructure, bunkering and vessels, as well as training programs. By leveraging Tanzania’s renewable energy potential and strategic maritime position, the collaboration wants to support global efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry.

Madadh MacLaine, Secretary-General of ZESTAs, commented: “Green Hydrogen, as the only absolute zero emissions and zero pollution fuel, is critical for the future of Shipping and Ocean Health. Through this partnership with TEEMO, we will build local expertise and infrastructure in Tanzania to accelerate the adoption of zero emissions maritime technologies, while creating economic opportunities in line with the UN SDGs and global climate goals.”

Winfrida Shonde of TEEMO stated: “We are thrilled to partner with ZESTAs to bring zero emissions solutions to Tanzania’s maritime sector. This collaboration aligns with our mission to protect the environment and empower our communities through innovative and climate-resilient projects.”

To note, ZESTAs revealed it is also partnering with a German organization experienced in hydrogen project development to provide additional expertise and ensure projects in Tanzania. It was agreed between all parties to develop the projects in aligned communication along a stringent timeline.
