WATCH: BP-Eni JV and Yinson Production cheer ‘major’ progress for Angola-bound FPSO

Business Developments & Projects

Yinson Production, a subsidiary of Kuala Lumpur-based energy infrastructure and technology company Yinson Holdings, has tucked a new milestone under its belt for floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel, which is destined to work off the coast of Angola for Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP and Eni.

After Yinson Production won a contract for the FPSO Agogo with a total value of around $5.7 billion in February 2023 from Azule Energy, strides were made in the construction of the FPSO with the lifting and installation operation of the first modules and the connection of the electrical system of the residential area for the FPSO at the shipyard where the construction was taking place.

With a firm operation period of 15 years, the FPSO contract contains additional optional periods of up to five years. Designed with a full suite of carbon emission reduction technologies, this is said to be the first-ever FPSO featuring carbon capture technology.

According to Yinson Production, “a significant milestone” was achieved in the FPSO Agogo project by completing the vessel’s module-lifting last week. This is said to have marked “a major step forward” in the project. The commissioning activities are also described as advancing smoothly, with the load test of essential generators completed. The Malaysia player underlines that such achievement demonstrates the FPSO Agogo’s steady momentum.

Furthermore, the company claims this project has substantially completed Phase 1 of repair and life extension (R&LE), finalizing core engineering and procurement, paving the way for the next phases, and ensuring the project remains on track. This is interpreted to showcase Yinson Production’s commitment to delivering “exceptional results” to its client, Azule Energy, and underscoring its expertise in managing complex offshore projects.

Per Dyberg, Yinson Production’s Project Director for FPSO Agogo, commented: “Looking ahead, we’re eager to achieve the next major milestone, driving the project forward with precision and dedication.”

With a production capacity of 120,000 barrels of oil per day, the FPSO Agogo will be deployed at the Agogo Integrated West Hub development project located in the West Hub of Block 15/06 offshore Angola, once construction is completed. The unit is expected to have an estimated reduction of carbon emissions of 27% compared to a conventional design.

Moreover, the FPSO incorporates other technologies to curb emissions, including a closed flare system, hydrocarbon blanketing, combined cycle technology, automated process controls, and all-electric drive systems. The Malaysian firm deems these features integral to its transition towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

Several companies have been tasked with assignments on this project offshore Angola, such as Aker Solutions, which is in charge of providing the umbilical; Subsea 7 has been hired for the transport and installation of flexible pipes, umbilicals, and associated subsea structures, Baker Hughes is dealing with delivering subsea equipment and services, and TechnipFMC will supply risers and flowlines.

In addition, MAN Energy Solutions is taking care of the FPSO Agogo‘s gas lift, injection, and export application. TMC Compressors will deliver a large-capacity marine compressed air system on board the FPSO.
