Echandia to provide battery system for vessel conversion project

Project & Tenders

Swedish maritime battery system supplier Echandia has received an order from compatriot ferry company Öresundslinjen to provide a battery system for the conversion of M/S Hamlet from fossil fuel to full electrical operation.

As informed, the ferry M/S Hamlet is operating on the Helsingør – Helsingborg route. Echandia will deliver the battery system tailored for a minimum operational lifespan of 10 years without requiring battery replacement.

Furthermore, the battery can be recharged in both ports in eleven minutes on average., the Swedish supplier said. The equipment is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2025.

“After evaluating multiple battery suppliers for this significant conversion project, the superior lifetime and lower weight of the Echandia battery system stood out as the primary reasons why Echandia emerged as the optimal choice for us,” said Kristian Durhuus, CEO at Molslinjen.

“These factors contribute to the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and environmental footprint when compared to other options.”

“This order once again demonstrates the recognition of Echandia’s battery systems within the maritime market, particularly in Denmark. Following the successful deployment of harbour buses in Copenhagen in 2020 and securing the contract for Molslinjen’s RoPax ferries for Als and Samsö in 2022, it is evident that Danish shipowners are increasingly valuing the advantages of Echandia when evaluating battery system options,” stated Morten Larsen, Regional Director EU at Echandia.

Back in March 2024, Echandia secured an order for battery systems which will be installed on four vessels with hybrid propulsion. The contract includes an option for delivery to two additional vessels. The company did not reveal further details.
